Walleyes

My walleye season begins in Red Wing around the end of November just as the lakes start to freeze. I take to Red Wing because it is an unbelievable fishery.

From the end of November to the first of the year, we average roughly 230 fish a day. Typically we finish each day either by catching 40-pound flatheads or good old-fashioned carp snagging. The best part of Red Wing is that we don’t have to get our hands wet because we do not use live bait. We vertical jig with plastics, pitch blade baits and ring worms.

March into April usually finds me on pool 2 in St. Paul. Here we fish full spawn monsters. This is done by vertical jigging with fat heads and pitching ringworms into the shallows. If you’re looking for a trophy walleye, this is the time to catch it. While the numbers of fish aren’t as high as Red Wing, the average fish size ranges from 5-12 pounds and some of the 30-inch fish carry up to an impressive 20-inch girth!

I remain on the Croix from mid-April through June taking frequent trips north. I’m not sure about you, but for me, a trip up north after a long winter is just what I need. The DNR has done a great job with the northern lakes, providing fisherman with the ability to catch large numbers of keepers. There is a staggering number of fish in the four to eight pound range in these lakes as well. If walleyes are your game, give me a call. We can fill your freezers or put one on your wall. Who knows, maybe we can do both!

Crappies

Crappies are one of my favorite fish to catch, not to mention they taste the best. There are so many different ways to catch them and each way is enjoyable. I start guiding crappies at ice out and continue through most of the summer.

Catfish

Catfish can be caught almost any time of the year and they offer quite a unique style of fishing. Most of my catfishing is done at night, in the summer. However, one of your best chances at catching a flathead weighing 40+ pounds is in the wintering holes at Red Wing.

Sturgeon

Sturgeon fishing is an exciting experience, to say the least. Sturgeons fight harder than any other freshwater fish. It’s hard to believe it when you feel how light they bite…but you’ll know once you set the hook. Sturgeon trips are available in both the spring and fall. If you don’t have anything going on after work in the late fall, I’d highly recommend a sturgeon fishing trip. The season is short but after you get the strength back in your arms, you’ll wish it had lasted longer.
